About the Westmorland Horticultural Society

The Westmorland Horticultural Society was formed over 70 years ago in the 1930’s by a group of like-minded gardeners. The name was changed to the Moncton Gladiolus Society briefly in the mid 30’s, then a few years later back to the Westmorland Horticultural Society. In the fall of 2006 the Westmorland Horticultural Society was renamed the Metro Moncton Horticultural Society in 2006. In 2007 the society returned to the original name Westmorland Horticultural Society. The Society over the years from its beginnings has expanded its interests to include all types of flowers, fruits, vegetables, house plants. Today, there are approximately 150 members in the Westmorland Horticultural Society and that number continues to grow.

The Society has various events, and projects that will interest any gardener. Regular monthly meetings are held where members can enjoy a presentation from a guest speaker, or mingle with other gardeners who share your passion. A monthly newsletter is filled with informative articles, tips, and recipes submitted by members. The annual Garden Show is a place where you can enter your prized specimens for a chance to win a prize, along with entertainment, workshops, and silent auction. Plant auctions; Potluck dinners; Bus trips! The list goes on! As you explore our site you will see all of this and more!

We are known as the ”Friendly Garden People” and for good reason. Among the members you will find a mix of those who have a small vegetable or flower garden to those who are absolutely addicted to the art of gardening. There are those who specialize in a particular plant, be it dahlias, African violets, orchids, strawberries, gladiolas, or rare tropical house plants and there are those who will make every attempt to outwit Nature in their attempt to grow a new plant which is not hardy to our Zone. There are young gardeners and gardeners who are young at heart. This wide variety of people with such a vast array of knowledge is at the heart of what makes the Society great. All are willing to share their tips and expertise. Society members swap seeds, plants, and advice. Each monthly meeting ends with a lunch of sandwiches and sweets and on any given evening you will hear members offering to trade a hosta for a day lily or sharing information on a new garden tool that they have just discovered or a method of ridding your garden of slugs.

Whatever your gardening interests, your sure to find a place to meet some friendly people and learn more about your passion!
